No longer an early bird

Hi!

When I left you last, I mentioned that I was going to get up super early and head to the gym. 

EPIC FAIL.

Not only did I not get up early and make it to the gym, but I didn’t get up until 7:15, which left me about 0.2 seconds to get ready.  The result was another wavy-hair, did-I-put-any-mascara-on day. 

Regardless, I had a pretty fabulous and productive day at the office.  Things were pretty quiet -  I glued my butt to my chair and only had one meeting, which happened to be a conference call that I worked right through (it was more of an FYI meeting for me anyway).  I even got all of my homework done over lunch, so I didn’t have to stay late.

I did make it to the gym after work.  It might be my imagination, but I think the new people have started to thin out  some.  I hate to wish people would stop exercising, but I hate having to dodge people or wait in lines for machines.  So maybe I should hope that the new people don’t stop exercising, they just stop exercising at my gym.  🙂

Apparently,  some time in the last couple days, I managed to pull a muscle on my left side, probably an oblique.  Which is funny, because I didn’t do anything crazy with abs last week but boy can I feel it.   Have you ever pulled a muscle in a strange place?

I’m not sure why I go back and forth on whether I should work out in the morning or after work.  Both have their pros and cons. 

For morning workouts:

Pros:

  • Less likely to have life  get in the way of a workout
  • Gets it done and over with early on

Cons:

  • Rushed when getting dressed in the morning
  • Workout in general is rushed
  • Fueling post-workout is hard on my way to the office
  • When I have to get up early in the morning, I sometimes have trouble getting to sleep at night

For evening workouts:

Pros:

  • Workout can be as long or as short as I want
  • Fueling post-workout is easy
  • Fueling pre-workout is easy

Cons:

  • More likely to skip due to not feeling well or having an obligation after work
  • Eats up my evenings, which makes it less likely I’ll spend a lot of time preparing a unique dinner

I used to be a morning workout person.  That’s when I’m the most consistent.  But it requires far more planning than working out after work and fueling is difficult. 

What I need to do is be flexible – workout in the morning if need be and workout at night if need be.  

When do you prefer to workout?

While throwing dinner together, I made a protein shake.

I used to drink a chocolate protein shake every day after working out – usually Silk Chocolate soy milk with a scoop of Designer Whey Chocolate (best tasting protein powder) and a little extra cocoa powder.  I don’t know why I got off the chocolate protein shake bandwagon, but I have officially jumped back on.

 

This guy had:

– 1 c. unsweetened chocolate almond breeze

– 1/2 c. silk plain soymilk

– huuuge handful baby spinach

– 1 scoop GNC chocolate soy protein

– 1 tsp. cocoa powder

– stevia

 

Delicious.

For dinner tonight, I pulled together leftovers from last night plus farmer’s market veggies:  roasted brussels and butternut squash fries.

This time I had extra Tomatillo Salsa and added some tabasco sauce.  It was super good.

Plus veggies – I missed them last night.

Just butternut squash “fries” -  sprayed with olive oil spray and sprinkled with Prudhomme’s mexican seasoning.

Tomorrow is HUMPDAY already!  Love that the weeks are flying by!

    I definitely prefer morning ones. They make me feel refreshed and energized for the day, while evening ones leave me tired and cranky.
    7:15 am is plenty early for me! 😉

    I like a nice mix of both morning and evening workouts. I really love the pro of getting the workout done in the morning though and having more time in the evenings! Love the veggie plate. Its strange to me that there are people that despise veggies!

    lately, it’s been after work if I do any yoga. I would love to get up early, but now that we have a puppy…that kinda takes over everything in the morning 🙂

    I can’t wait for my roasted brussel sprouts tomorrow!

    brussels sprouts porn is right! they look fantastic!!!! i would prefer to work out in the afternoon, but do it in the morning since I never really know what the afternoon will look like for me on any given day 🙂
